Plant Care: Philodendron Giganteum
The Philodendron Giganteum is commonly known as the Elephant Ears due to its fanning leaves. It has been one of the favorite plants of many plant lovers and gardeners out there. I am sure that you have seen this plant, but you may not just be aware of its name. This plant comes in variegated forms. Its leaves can stretch up to two feet and can be as tall as several feet as well.
Why is it famous?
This plant is famous for two reasons. First, it is very aesthetic due to its natural evergreen colors and its ability to fill a bare space into a beautiful one. Second, it is a low-maintenance type of plant! It needs not any constant monitoring and because, with minimal care, it can grow into a beautiful plant. Philodendron Giganteum will require you less hard work and yet, give you much-satisfying results.
Fertilizers as Boosters
The use of organic fertilizers is highly encouraged. You can make use of barks and leaves on the ground as your natural fertilizer. If you opt to go for the chemical type of fertilizer, you have to do it minimally because it can also adversely affect the plant’s natural growth.
Humidity
Keeping the humidity level at 60% can help your Philodendron Giganteum maintain its cleanliness and freshness. Since this is a tropical plant, it is expected to require such a level of humidity for it to grow. Giving the leaves a TLC (tender loving care) by doing some sponge bath may also help the plant keep its natural shine.
Soil Requirement
This plant needs loose potting soil. The well-drained soil coupled with high organic matter can help your plant remain healthy. Additionally, you may also add some bark, coconut husk, and peat moss to retain the plant’s moisture.
Sun Exposure
The Elephant Ears need at least 70 to 85% of sunlight to grow into a gentle giant type of plant. The greener the plant appears, it is receiving a good amount of sun exposure. If you plan to put it indoors, putting it in place to get low filtered sunlight may help. You can put it just below other bigger plants or in a canopy or lanai if it is outdoor.
Watering Guide
If the plant is positioned outdoors, watering it every fortnight and making sure that it has holes to drain appropriately is necessary. Now, if you happen to put it indoors, watering it at least twice a week is the recommended schedule. As the temperature gets colder, the less water this plant needs.
Leaves Observation
· Tan Patches can be an indicator of a bacterial infection called Erwinia blight.
· Yellow or wilt leaves can indicate rotting roots, usually caused by overwatering or a possible fungal infection. If the Yellow is on edge, it can also mean that the soil is too soggy.
· Brown edges of the leaves, it may mean that the plant is underwatered.
· Pale leaves may also indicate that the plant needs more sun exposure.
With minimal care, the Philodendron Giganteum can give your space a more homey and nature-friendly vibe. Just follow the simple tips given in this article, and I am sure you will see your plant grow into a beautiful one. Good luck!
